New ways of shifting freight transport to ship and rail
Rethinking intermodal transport
For years, there have been calls to shift freight transport from road to rail and inland waterways. Little has actually happened. That’s why we want to dedicate ourselves to the question of what hurdles still exist in intermodal transport in the Schiff+Schiene innovation project. And how we can overcome these and help shape the transport transition. After all, all stakeholders confirm that they would like to transport more goods intermodally. But there are still restrictions that prevent them from doing so: a lack of networks, the quality of intermodal transport or sector-specific transport requirements.

Aim of the innovation project
With the EFRE project ‘New ways of shifting transport to ship and rail’, we want to explore how such a shift can be achieved along selected transport corridors such as the Rhine in the future. This also takes place against the background of reducing or avoiding climate-damaging emissions in freight transport. Shifting requires that transport can be bundled to a greater extent in future without restricting the time or quality of consignments. This requires a rethink on the part of those involved in all modes of transport, who must be open to new partnerships. Trust must be built up so that partners from all modes of transport can work together in networks based on trust in the future. This is also where we want to start. The coordination of intermodal transport between all partners must become easier. We want to dedicate ourselves to this task in our Schiff+Schiene innovation project. New AI-supported scheduling tools should make this possible. They will allow all intermodal partners to find new environmentally friendly and cost-effective ways to transport goods. This is to be developed in the joint project.
We are delighted to be working on this innovation project with the following partners:
The Verband Spedition und Logistik (VSL) is coordinating the EFRE joint project. The partners are the University of Duisburg-Essen, Prof. Dr Noche (transport systems and logistics) and the company AStrans GmbH Bottrop.
Testing in practice
We are looking for logistics companies interested in combined freight transport to test our newly developed solutions.
If you are curious, we are at your disposal as a contact partner.
We are pleased to share further information and answer questions.
Be part of shaping sustainability in logistics!
